Friends of the Coronado Library Support the Renovation of the Library Winn Room – Option 4

August  20, 2024

The Coronado City Council will be discussing the fate of the Winn Room Renovation during the Tuesday, August 20th Council session. The Council meeting will begin at 4pm in the Council Chambers, 1825 Strand Way.

Please attend the meeting on August 20 and let the City Council and the Coronado community know you support the City adopting a plan for renovating the (50-year old) Winn Room that provides the Library and our community with a state of the art civic engagement celebration and performance center that will effectively serve the needs of our community for decades to come. The FOL Board has endorsed Option 4 (see below) as the best option to achieve these goals.

Email the Mayor, City Council Members and City Manager directly to express your opinions on the Winn Room:

Mayor Richard Bailey: rbailey@coronado.ca.us
Councilmember Mike Donovan: mdonovan@coronado.ca.us
Councilmember Carrie Downey (Subcommittee member) cdowney@coronado.ca.us
Councilmember John Duncan: jduncan@coronado.ca.us
Councilmember Casey Tanaka (Subcommittee member): ctanaka@coronado.ca.us
City Manager Tina Friend: cm@coronado.ca.us
President, Coronado Library Board of Trustees Julie Webb care of Elizabeth Skelly,
Coronado Library: eskelly@coronado.ca.us
Director, Coronado Library Shaun Briley: sbriley@coronado.ca.us

Your attendance at this meeting to express support for your library is of critical importance. The more voices in support of Option4 – especially voices new to this discussion – the greater the positive impact on the Council.

If you haven’t spoken out in support of Winn Room Option 4, this could be your last chance to do so! Copies of the meeting agendas can be found at www.coronado.ca.us.

THE DAY WAS FILLED WITH REUNITING OLD FRIENDS AND MAKING NEW ONES.

Special Thanks From the Friends of the Coronado Library to everyone who contributed to our tremendously successful 2024 Annual Book Fair

April 20, 2024

The success of the 52nd Annual Friends of the Coronado Library Book Fair was truly a result of community collaboration and was made possible by the dedication of community members who generously donated their gently used books, the over 100 dedicated volunteers who worked tirelessly to collect, sort, price, and set up the sale and the over five hundred community members who came, saw and bought books.  All of the money raised is used by the Friends to underwrite the costs of the dozens of fabulous free programs our Library puts on for our community every day, week, month, and year.

It would be hard to mention everyone who contributed to this cherished community tradition without missing a name or two but we want you all to know that you are all equally appreciated. Without every one of you, this event would not be possible. Special shout-outs to:

  • The City of Coronado Police Department for coordinating parking and permitting;

  • City Public Works for providing trash and recycling bins;

  • The City Recreation Department for supplying essential tables;

  • The FOL Book Fair Committee led by Sharon Sherman, Roger Clapp, and Sharon Hall

The FOL Board of Directors for their unwavering support and hard work on the day of and months leading up to the Book Fair; Library Director Shaun Briley and his phenomenal library staff for always providing leadership and inspiration for the Friends; The over 750 community members of the Friends who make our organization possible.

Our own standing ovation to the numerous volunteers who worked on the day of the event including:

  • Volunteers from BSA Troop 806 and its sister Troop 1806.

  • Students from the Coronado High School National Honor Society.

  • Library staff spearheaded by Glenn Risolo and Jacquline Luna.

And Special thanks to:

Starbucks, High Tide, and Donut Beach Coronado for providing nourishment to the volunteers;

City Hall, Gelato Paradiso, Emerald City, Starbucks, Island Barbers, Silver Strand Elementary School, Coronado Pediatric Dentistry, Frenchie’s, Nado Gelato, URT, Souvenir store near McPs, McPs, Bay Books, MJs clothing, Moo Time, Central Liquor and Deli, Coronado Hardware, Coronado Tasting Room, Rosemary Trattoria, Saiko Sushi, Burger King, Cold Stone Creamery, Coronado Coffee Company, The Bay Company, La Camisa, Costa Azul, Lil’ Piggy’s Bar-B-Q, Nicky Rotten’s, Spiro’s Greek Cafe, Sea La Vie, SD Trading Company, Parfait Paris, CrossFit Coronado, Village Pizzeria Bayside to mention a few for putting up our flyers in their windows and sharing the word, we couldn't have done it without you!

2024 Book Fair Family Corner

Our Family Corner: Children explored the idea of becoming an author themselves. Quoting a young girl (4 yrs) “ You know I’m going to be published one day. I want to submit my cookbook!”

Their confidence was so inspiring and the reason why the Friends, community boosters of our Library, work tirelessly to share our love for the written word/ books.

The Friends group generously finances most of the Library's events and special offerings, such as the Community READ, the Summer Reading Program, the Winter Read Challenge, and the Library's art exhibitions. We also contribute funds for specific needs like updating the Teen Center with new furniture and shelving. If you have attended Library events, it's likely that the Friends of the Library, consisting of hundreds of community members, have supported and funded them.

Special Thanks - 2023 Annual Book Fair

It truly does require a community effort. Last year's Book Fair was a tremendous success, thanks to the numerous individuals who contributed to making this beloved community event possible.

  • Generous readers consistently donate their gently used books to FOL, while dedicated volunteers tirelessly sort, price, and store these donations year after year.

  • Leading up to the event, the City of Coronado Police Department arranged parking, City Public Works provided trash and recycling bins, and the City Recreation Department supplied essential tables.

  • On the event day, numerous volunteers from BSA Troop 806 and its sister Troop 1806, sailors from the USS Lincoln, students from the Coronado High School National Honor Society, the Library staff, and committed Coronado residents dedicated their time to supporting the Library. Special thanks to Starbucks, High Tide, and Donut Beach Coronado for providing nourishment to the volunteers.

“The day was filled with reuniting old friends and making new ones. Most importantly, every earned penny will contribute to the Library's diverse programs for the community. A big thank you to everyone involved.”
