Carl J. Luna, President
Carl Luna is a professor emeritus of political science at San Diego Mesa College and a visiting professor at his alma mater, the University of San Diego. In 1999- 2000 he served as a senior Fulbright Scholar lecturing on international relations and politics at Nizhny Novgorod State University in the Russian Federation. In 2014 the Association of Community College Trustees recognized him as one of the top five community college professors in the country.
Dr. Luna is a frequent and sought after nonpartisan commentator on politics, giving almost two thousand interviews to local, national and international media including public radio and TV, CBS, NBC, the Associated Press and the BBC. He is San Diego Fox5’s resident political analyst and a frequent commentator for San Diego KPBS. He has written and blogged extensively for the San Diego Union Tribune and San Diego City Beat Magazine and is a contributing author to the anthology of presidential biographies, Public Pillars, Private Lives and a revised volume on the presidency: Imperial Presidents: The Rise of Executive Power from Roosevelt to Obama.
Dr. Luna is co-chair of Restoring Respect, a community initiative promoting greater civility in San Diego dialogue supported by a consortium of academic institutions and community groups. In 2014 he became the founding director of the Institute for Civil Civic Engagement, formed between the University of San Diego and San Diego City, Continuing Education, Mesa and Miramar Colleges.
A long-time Coronado resident, Carl has been a member of the Friends of the Library Board since 2019 and board secretary 2021-2022.
Sharon Hall, Secretary
A recent newcomer to Coronado (2021), moving from Maryland to be close to her family, Sharon found a welcoming community in the Board of the Friends of the Coronado Public Library. She now serves as secretary, and also serves on the Coronado Library Board of Trustees. Sharon’s career was in education; as an elementary and high school teacher, a professional developer, and policy development and implementation at the local, state, and federal levels. She is an avid traveler; journeying for a year in a Volkswagen camper on the Pan American Highway, living in Greece, and continuing to explore Europe, Canada, and the United States. Sharon enjoys hiking, concerts, theater, museums, reading, and attending programs at the Coronado Public Library.
Kellen Gill, Treasurer
Kellen Gill is the Chief Audit and Regulatory Officer at California Coast Credit Union where he oversees internal audit, risk management, legal and compliance. Previously, Kellen has worked in a variety of professional disciplines taking on increasing responsibility in the areas of corporate tax, accounting, internal audit, and regulatory & legislative policy for the Sempra family of companies. In addition, Kellen worked as an Adjunct Professor at the University of San Diego and teaches the CPA examination preparation courses for Becker Professional Education. Kellen has a Master of Science Degree in Tax from San Diego State University and earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of San Diego. He is also a Certified Public Accountant, licensed to practice in the state of California.
Kellen’s recent nonprofit experience includes volunteer work with the Cal Coast Cares Foundation, which provides student scholarships and teacher grants. In addition, Kellen volunteers as a mentor for underserved foster youth with Promises2Kids, a San Diego-based nonprofit organization focused solely on foster system youth and young adults.
When he is not working, Kellen and his husband Justin enjoy trying new restaurants, cooking, and traveling with their seven-year-old daughter, Lily.
Whitney Antrim
Whitney is a native Islander and a lifelong friend of the Coronado Public Library.
Dan Hunting
Dan Hunting is a Coronado resident since 1985. He is a retired physician. He enjoys gardening, music, camping, cycling, and travel.
Jeanne Luna
Jeanne Luna, Board Member of the Friends of the Library, is a retired teacher whose love of books came at an early age. Growing up overseas with no TV and a distinct lack of entertainment, books became a refuge and joy. After passing that love on to her four girls, and teaching the love of reading to hundreds of students, she wants to continue to encourage this love of books and reading in the community. Libraries are an essential part of any community and reading opens new worlds for everyone.
Rachel Ricker
Rachel Ricker, born and raised in Coronado, has strong ties to the community and cherishes her lifelong connection to the Coronado Public Library. From childhood, the library served as a place for both study and leisure, shaping her love for education. With degrees in teaching and educational leadership from UC Berkeley, Rachel has spent her career focused on improving students' academic outcomes, particularly for those in overlooked communities. Rachel recognizes the Coronado Public Library as a vital and welcoming place for community members of all ages and backgrounds to enjoy books and gain knowledge.
Jean Seager
Jean Seager has been a Coronado resident since 1975, and has volunteered for many community organizations over the years. When her children were young, she loved bringing them to the library. From pumpkin carving at Halloween to story hour in the children’s library to summer reading programs, her children benefited from a myriad of activities that the library offered. Now that her children are grown, she enjoys the book collection as well as concerts and lectures. She is convinced that the library is one of the jewels in Coronado’s crown and wants to work to make it even better.
Marsi Steirer
Marsi Steirer, a native San Diegan, moved with her family to Coronado in 1995. They live in a historically designated home built in 1921, that they have completely renovated. Marsi’s career was in the public sector, and she worked for the City of San Diego for 30 years overseeing water initiatives including the City’s water conservation program, water resources planning efforts, recycled water projects, and the Water Purification Demonstration Project now known as the Pure Water Program. She joined the Friends of the Coronado Public Library board in 2015, serving one year as Vice President, four as President, and she co-manages Second Hand Prose book shop. She is a wife, mother and grandmother.
